OUR STORY

New Perspectives on Actor Training

Today’s professional training rarely treats the actor as a creative force. Methods and techniques are often not explored but dictated, like answers to a test.

The realities of the job–the hectic pace, the hurdles that must be cleared to book a role, the pressure to tell the story while fitting the tone & tenor of the project–too often combine to persuade professional actors (and their teachers) to make safe, predictable choices that lack the idiosyncrasies and imagination truly reflective of their artistry.

Desean Terry and Hugh O’Gorman created the Curiosity Group to provide conservatory-quality training aimed at reinvigorating the actor’s role in the creative process.

Through a cross-disciplinary approach, TCG curates a space where professional actors can benefit from innovative training that builds actor intuition, imagination, and technique while allowing the actor to succeed at their highest level professionally.

There are no shortcuts to great acting.

By staying curious and challenged, actors grow in their abilities and achieve true artistic results. The real work begins outside your comfort zone.

We provide our students a safe environment in which to “get lost” in their work while simultaneously expanding their creative selves.

This offers the opportunity to experience the profound sense of being truly present

Founded by industry veterans who view the actor as an artist, not a prop.

Desean and Hugh have decades of experience teaching in both university conservatories and private studios.

The Curiosity Group marries the sense of exploration and the pragmatism inherent in these training paradigms and models. They are drawn to traversing new, truly cross-disciplinary ground in the world of actor training.

Why do we call ourselves the Curiosity Group?

Our job as actors is to be fully engaged in the present moment. Curiosity is one of the best motivators to maintain that presence.

Studies show our attention span only lasts twelve seconds and is rapidly decreasing. Curiosity is the glue that keeps our attention on the target. It is the means for staying focused, engaged and motivated artistically, as we continue on the path of lifelong learning.

There can be a method to the magic, though. By cultivating curiosity and an appetite for risk-taking, the actor grows in their ability to access their true artistry. We provide our students a supportive environment in which to “get lost” in their work; ironically, these are the moments when the creative self is found. Activation of the subconscious creates that desirable but elusive state of profound presence.
